Zooma Annapolis: Girlfriends Unite!

June 6, 2010

Today I am running my first women's race, the Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon. That means the race field is 99.5% women and a handful of men who look extremely pleased with themselves for registering. Apparently, ladies know how to throw a good race. Wine tasting and massage at the finish line? Now that's good stuff. One word of caution, if you ever run one...there was major perfume going on at the starting line, so it can be difficult to get any fresh air.

What is the universal outfit of a chick race? Fuschia racing shirt with two french braided pigtails and an optional stylish head band. I saw so many of this look that they actually began to run (no pun intended) together. I felt like Where's Waldo in my souveneir race shirt, because I definitely stood out for not wearing pink.

In true girly spirit, instead of finisher's medals we were given cute little silver finisher's necklaces. I have to admit, they are adorable (little sailboats with the race and date). There is still a part of me that wishes I got a big, gaudy finisher's medal like in all my other races. The necklace looks a little wimpy in comparison hanging on the wall of glory in my home gym. Don't you have a wall of glory in your house? A wall totally dedicated to your own coolness and accomplishments? If not, I highly recommend that you make one.

I have to admit, I was missing my girlfriends at this race. For some reason, I neglected to get organized and invite a race buddy to join me for this event. I was feeling a bit lonely at the start. Days after the race, one of my college sorority sisters emailed me and said, "I was just looking at the race results. Did you know we finished right after one another in our age group?!" Gee, I didn't even know she was running that day, and we never noticed each other. At least I had a buddy there after all!
